How a private ancillary fund (PAF) works
A PAF is a type of charitable trust that can be established by individuals, families or associations. When you establish a PAF, your donation is invested and the income earned is distributed to charities or causes of your choice in perpetuity. A PAF must be managed by a corporate trustee (such as Perpetual).
Benefits of giving through a PAF
Control and flexibility
A PAF gives you control over which eligible charities or causes to support and how. You define the purpose of the fund and choose how your donations are used - for the purpose of providing grants, awards or scholarships.
Provide a sustainable gift
Unlike making a one-off charitable donation, a PAF allows your chosen charity or cause to benefit in perpetuity. Investing your donations prudently over the long term allows your foundation to continue distributing tax-free earnings year after year.
Maintain your privacy
As you are not raising funds publicly, information about your PAF and its donors is completely private.
Be involved – or not
You can decide on how involved you would like to be in running your PAF. If you choose Perpetual as trustee of your PAF, we perform tasks such as administration, accounting and maintaining compliance. If you require, we can also help you select, support and monitor your beneficiaries, and assist you in developing your foundation’s investment strategy.
Create a family tradition
You can involve your family and close friends (within certain limits) in support of your PAF to help the community. You can also name your foundation in honour of your family or in memory of a loved one.
Tax advantages
Donations to your PAF are generally tax deductible.
