The Ramaciotti Foundations give $1.6 million to biomedical research
As trustee of the Ramaciotti Foundations, Perpetual hosted the Ramaciotti Awards on 4 November 2010, where over $1.6 million was given to biomedical research. The Awards provide assistance to scientists in areas such as molecular biology, genetics and immunology, and assist young investigators taking up new challenges in biomedical research.
Established by Vera Ramaciotti in 1970, the Ramaciotti Foundations are managed by Perpetual and are one of the largest private contributors to biomedical research in Australia. They make significant distributions each year through the Ramaciotti Awards. This year, they celebrate their 40th anniversary, having granted more than $48 million to research projects since their establishment.
Immunisation researcher Professor Christopher Goodnow wins Ramaciotti Medal
Professor Christopher Goodnow from the Australian National University was awarded the prestigious Ramaciotti Medal for Excellence in Biomedical Research. The Ramaciotti Medal carries a $50,000 prize and recognises an outstanding contribution to clinical or biomedical research, or the way in which healthcare is delivered.
Professor Goodnow was awarded the Medal for his research into how the immune system is controlled so that it does not attack our own organs and tissues when it repels invading bacteria and viruses. His work will enable scientists to develop more effective drugs for treatment of a wide range of conditions, from infectious diseases to diabetes and cancer.
